The following account contains powerful, moving testimony from one of our San Antonio Ready to Work (RTW) participants. It’s a story that speaks to the heart of why this program exists and how deeply it can impact lives…
Adolfo R. came to RTW after serving 11 years in prison. He grew up in a single-parent household, spent time living on the streets, and found comfort in instability, because it was all he knew. Despite these challenges, Adolfo was determined to change the direction of his life, not just for himself, but for his family and community.
With the encouragement of his wife, Adolfo enrolled in our CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) training program. Even though he had previously started training elsewhere, he chose to start over and stay committed. Through hard work and focus, he earned his CDL — a major milestone!
But his challenges didn’t stop there.
Here is Adolfo in his own words:
“I knew that with my background, it would be hard to find a good-paying job to support my family and help those around me. I had heard stories about people with records making a good living through trucking, so I looked into it. My wife came across the Ready to Work program, and that’s when things started to change.
Even after earning my CDL, I faced rejection. More than four companies initially hired me, but once my background check came in, they all withdrew their offers. I remember driving to Houston for an orientation I gave them a hair follicle test, went to lunch, and then got an email saying they could no longer hire me. Weeks later, I found out it was because of my record. I was devastated.
Still, I kept my faith, believing that God had something better for me. And He did.
All glory to God I was hired as a mixer driver with my CDL, making the kind of money I used to chase out in West Texas. The best part? The job is just 15 minutes from my home.
I’m so grateful for all y’all do especially to my case manager, April. You never gave up on me and kept pushing me forward. Thank you for believing in me.”
Adolfo is thankful for the continued support of Ready to Work, Restore Education and his RTW case manger for the life-changing opportunities it provides to so many across our community.
“Adolfo’s’ testimony is more than a success story; it’s a reflection of resilience, transformation, and the undeniable power of opportunity. His journey is a reminder that when we invest in people and believe in their potential, even the most difficult pasts can lead to bright futures.”
